Samsung trademarks "DeX Pad" just in time for the Galaxy S9

The Samsung DeX Station expanded the Galaxy S8 capabilities to the desktop but the sequel may be even better. The company filed a trademark application at the end of December, suggesting that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will get a redesigned dock.

Rumors suggest that it will be a wireless dock – leveraging the wireless charging capabilities of the Galaxy flagship as well as wireless video out. The phone’s touchscreen will reportedly be usable as a touchpad (the phone will lie flat on the charging pad).

The current DeX station relies on DisplayPort to output video over USB-C, which the dock transforms

into HDMI. It’s not clear what wireless solution Samsung will use (with WiDi dead and Miracast having high latency, it could be some proprietary solution).

Here’s how the application describes the DeX Pad:

Application software for projecting the screen of mobile device to displays via computer peripheral devices and wireless networks; Computer peripheral devices; Computer software for wireless network communications; Computer software for controlling user interface mode adaption; Computer software for use in computer access control.
