Welcome to the 234th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the headlines from the last week:
- Nintendo put Super Mario Run on sale this week in honor of Mario Day. The game is 50% off until March 25th. This is an excellent chance to pick up the platformer for cheap. A lot of people don't like that it's not a regular Mario game. However, it's still better than many other mobile platformers. At $4.99, it's actually a pretty good deal.
- Epic Games announced Fortnite: Battle Royale for Android and iOS this week. The company intends on bringing its massive 100-player battles directly to mobile. There could be some mishaps. It's a shooter with survival mechanics. That may not translate well on mobile. However, Epic Games is handling development in-house instead of going with a third party game developer. That could be great news. We'll let you know more when we learn more.
- Android P is out now in its first developer preview. It has a lot of stuff coming for apps, including new and updated APIs for better app development. However, it's not all fun and games. Android P blocks custom overlays, including the popular Substratum. The developers of Substratum aren't going down without a fight, though. There is a change.org petition to reverse what Google did to custom overlays. Here's hoping it works!
- Spotify is urging its users to use the actual Spotify app. This is a small crackdown on piracy since many third party apps give Spotify premium features away for free. The streaming giant has an upcoming IPO. This is likely an attempt to clean house a bit before they sell any shares. For now, it's just an email. However, we imagine that they'll start cracking down for real eventually. Plan accordingly.
- Jurassic World Alive was announced this week. It's a new AR-style game similar to Pokemon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter game by Niantic Labs. Players explore the real world and collect virtual dinosaurs in the process. Collectors then battle their dinosaurs against other people. It should be something a little different, but not much since Pokemon Go already exists. The game should be out sometime this spring.

Seige of Dragonspear is the first original Baldur's Gate game in a long time. It features a lot of the same stuff as prior games in the franchise. That includes a wicked long story, deep RPG mechanics, and complex controls. The game is mostly for tablets. The developers optimized it that way. Thus, it may not work that well on devices under seven inches. Some other features include cross-platform multiplayer and the original voice cast from Baldur's Gate. It's a tad expensive at $9.99. However, there are no in-app purchases or ads.
Lift Storage is a new workout app. It logs your workouts and lift maximums. The app then automatically creates workouts from that information. It features a no nonsense approach to the activity of working out. It requires no logins, usernames, or customization. You just open it, put information in, and the app goes to work. It's relatively new. Thus, bugs may be present. It should improve over time, though. It's currently completely free.
Cytus is easily one of the best rhythm games for mobile. Cytus II continues that proud tradition. It follows the same basic mechanics of its predecessor along with other games like VOEZ and DEEMO. There is a bit of a story line. However, it mostly serves just to push the game forward. Additionally, it comes with 30 songs with 30 more available as an in-app purchase and 180 total charts in easy, medium, and hard difficulties. This is probably the best rhythm game that 2018 sees. Get on that.
Otter Voice Meeting Notes is an app with all the features in the title. It's a collaborative note taking app with some decent features. They include a voice recorder for meetings, automatically generated transcripts, and more features for organization, editing, storing, and recording. The app boasts a bunch of features available thanks to its AI. This is definitely one powerful voice recorder for business use. It's also currently free with no in-app purchases. The app isn't without its issues, though, so do beware of bugs!
The Sims Mobile saw a global release this week to relative critical acclaim. It features all of the mechanics of a normal Sims game. You make a Sim, dress it, build it a house, live its life, and make it do things. The game also features online multiplayer, various rewards for doing stuff, It's a freemium mobile game. Thus, you can expect similar pitfalls to other freemium games. Still, it garners a 4.6 rating on Google Play and it's already fairly popular. It can't hurt to look, right?
