Huawei P20 and P20 Pro: all the rumors in one place (Updated March 12)

In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding Huawei's upcoming P20 and P20 Pro smartphones.

Although the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus are great smartphones, they didn't grab as much attention as flagships like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. That's something Huawei wants to change with the P20 series.

Let's take a look at the latest rumors surrounding the upcoming devices to learn more about them.

Huawei P20 series: Name and release date

The nitty-gritty
  • The phones will likely be called the P20 and P20 Pro instead of P11 and P11 Plus.
  • They will be announced on March 27 in Paris.

It was initially thought Huawei's upcoming flagships would go by the names of P11 and P11 Plus, to follow the typical consecutive number pattern of the series. But that won't be the case. Huawei has confirmed with a teaser video (below) that one of the upcoming smartphones will be called the P20, while the other is rumored to be called the P20 Pro.

When will the P20 series be announced? Huawei will hold a press event in Paris on March 27, where the smartphones will make their debut.

As a refresher, the P10 and P10 Plus were revealed in February 2017 at MWC in Barcelona. Huawei has pushed back the reveal date of their successors this year, likely because it didn't want to compete with the launch of Samsung's Galaxy S9 lineup that was revealed in Spain.

Huawei P20 series: Specs and features

The nitty-gritty
  • Both the P20 and P20 Pro should be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset, just like the Mate 10 series.
  • Huawei might include facial recognition that's safer than Apple's Face ID.
  • The P20 Pro could house a triple-lens 40 MP rear camera setup with 5x hybrid zoom.

We expect the P20 smartphones to come with larger displays than their predecessors — over 5.1 and 5.5 inches. However, rumors on this topic are scarce at the moment.

XDA Developers obtained firmware files of one of the P20 smartphones, likely to be the Pro model. It revealed that the handset could sport a 6.01-inch LCD display with Full HD+ resolution, which also means it should have an aspect ratio of 18:9. But take this one with a grain of salt; the P10 Plus has QHD resolution, and it doesn't make sense for its successor to offer anything less than that.

There's no word on what screen size the smaller of the two devices may offer. But if the firmware files are legit, our best guess is that it may come in somewhere between 5.5 and 5.7 inches.

The P20 and P20 Pro are expected to be powered by the latest Kirin 970 chipset.

What's almost certain is that the devices will be powered by the latest Kirin 970 chipset, the same chipset found in the Mate 10 series. This means they should have AI-related features on board including photo-based translations and a few smart tips like suggesting to enable Eye Comfort mode when reading in a dark environment.

What might set the P20 Pro apart from the competition is its camera setup. According to Evan Blass, it could house a triple lens 40 MP rear camera setup with 5x hybrid zoom. It's also expected that the setup will be co-developed with Leica, like in previous years. The P20, on the other hand, is expected to come with dual cameras on the back. Both devices may also have a 24 MP selfie snapper on board.

Huawei more or less confirmed the triple-camera setup with the press invite for its March 27 event, where the two smartphones will likely make their debut. It shows an image of three circles overlapping the Eiffel Tower in Paris, hinting that at least one of the devices will feature a triple-camera setup. Additionally, Huawei got a little smart with its invite which also says "see mooore with AI." Apart from being a blatant misspelling, the word "mooore" also contains three O's (likely representing the three lenses).

The handsets are also rumored to support facial recognition that is said to be more accurate and safer than Apple's Face ID. The company talked about the technology during the reveal of the Honor 7X and Honor View 10 in London, saying that it's secure enough to be used for payments and can unlock a smartphone in just 0.4 seconds.

It's possible the P20 Pro will come with an Always on Display feature, making it the second Huawei device to do so after the Mate 10 Pro. The feature was mentioned in the firmware files examined by the guys over at XDA Developers.

The files also suggest that the smartphone, which could have a similar footprint as the Pixel 2 XL, might pack a massive 4,000 mAh battery. For comparison, the battery of Google's flagship comes in at 3,520 mAh. The Huawei P20, on the other hand, may be powered by a 3,320 mAh battery.

The smartphones could also come with a digital assistant on board called HiAssistant, which may be exclusive to the Chinese market. It should allow users to control nearly every setting on the device with their voice like Wi-Fi, volume levels, screen brightness, and so forth.

Other details we expect to see include 6 or 8 GB of RAM, a microSD card slot, and Android Oreo with Huawei's EMUI user interface on top. Keeping the headphone jack and adding water resistance would also be a fantastic idea, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Huawei P20 series: Design

The nitty-gritty
  • The phones could sport a near bezel-less design and an iPhone X-like notch.
  • They might have a redesigned back with a vertically positioned camera setup.

Evan Blass has shared alleged images of the P20 and P20 Pro on Twitter, giving us a closer look at their designs. The two smartphones look more or less identical with one exception — the Pro model has the anticipated triple-camera setup on the back, while its smaller brother features dual rear cameras. You can check out both devices in two color options in the gallery below.

Evan Blass

The images reveal that the smartphones might come with a front-mounted fingerprint scanner and an iPhone X-like notch to house the secondary camera, speaker etc. They also show a redesigned back with a vertically positioned camera setup and Huawei's branding. The bezels are much thinner than those found on the P10 series, which would be a welcomed change.

CAD renders and a 360-degree video of the P20 released by OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles in February tell us a similar story, but they show the device will have three cameras on the back instead of two  check them out below.

OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles have also shared a video and renders of the P20's bigger brother, which are slightly different than the images provided by Evan Blass. They show that there's no fingerprint scanner on the front or back of the device. This may mean the handset could have the scanner under the display like the Vivo X20 Plus UD, or that Huawei will ditch it and only use facial recognition like the iPhone X. Also, the smartphone is referred to as the P20 Plus as opposed to the P20 Pro.

The renders provided by Evan Blass make more sense at this point than those from OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles. We doubt Huawei will be as bold to get rid of the fingerprint scanner from its handset. The company is expected to add features to its flagship, not remove them.

Huawei P20 series: Price

The nitty-gritty
  • The P20 smartphones could be more expensive than their predecessors.
  • The Huawei P20 could cost €679, making it €30 more expensive than the P10.
  • The Huawei P20 Pro could cost €899, which is up to €200 more than the P10 Plus.

The P10 retailed for €649 at launch, while the Pro model went for €699 (4 GB/64 GB) and €799 (6 GB/128 GB). According to the latest rumors, their successors will be more expensive.

Roland Quandt claims the P20 could go for €679 — €30 more than its predecessor. The Pro model is said to cost €899, which is €100 or €200 more than the P10 Plus. The P20 Lite is also expected to make its debut at the same time as the P20 and P20 Pro and will reportedly cost €369  you can learn more about the device here.

The P20 and P20 Pro prices roughly convert to $840 and $1,115, although they will be lower if the flagships make their way to the US — smartphones are generally more affordable in the US than in Europe.

One of the main reasons for Huawei's rapid success in Europe is that their smartphones have always had great price-performance ratios. With that in mind, it might be difficult for the P20 Pro to outsell its predecessor if it will indeed cost €200 more.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus retail for €849 and €949 in Europe. With an €899 price tag, the P20 Pro has to bring a number of new things to the table to have any chance of luring consumers away from Samsung's offering. Will it succeed? Only time will tell.

These are all the rumors about the P20 and P20 Pro we have come across so far. We'll update this page as soon as we hear more.
