Motorola’s new Moto Mod might be a Daydream viewer in disguise

Evan Blass

  • Evan Blass leaked two supposed press renders of Motorola's VR headset Moto Mod.
  • The headset features a circular camera cutout, though it could just be a Daydream viewer.
  • Price and availability information are still unknown.

We wouldn't call Motorola's Moto Mods a thriving ecosystem, but from a battery pack to a projector, they have you covered in more ways than one. One of those ways looks to be a VR headset, courtesy of VentureBeat writer Evan Blass.

Based on the images, the headset looks to be custom-built for the Moto Z line, though we only have two images to lean on. With VR headsets becoming more commonplace, this could be Motorola playing catch-up with the competition.

An interesting note is the circular camera cutout on the Moto Mod, which could mean it features basic augmented reality features. Then again, the cutout could just be there to make the headset as thin as possible and make room for the camera bump.

Also, not even Microsoft's Mixed Reality Headsets offer AR features yet, even though they feature cameras on the outside.

What this Moto Mod could more likely be is a Daydream View headset. If so, that means the Moto Z Play and Moto Z2 Play would not work with it, since both phones do not support Daydream.

Editor's Pick

As a final note, did Motorola need to turn the headset into a Moto Mod? Not only does that limit compatibility, but it could jack up the price. Moto Mods are not known for their affordability, so here's hoping that this one is reasonably priced.
