Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P support winding down, no Android P incoming

The Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C won't receive the final build of Android P, Google has confirmed. The news arrives via Ars Technica, and follows soon after the launch of the first Android P developer preview yesterday.

The devices were released between September and December 2015 and thus were expected to miss out on the next major Android software version. Most Android phones see two software upgrades (or less).

Google Photos can now export motion photos as GIFs. The app previously allowed users to save motion photos—made with the Pixel/Pixel 2's Google Camera app—but they were previously only exportable as still images or videos …

However, some users held out hope as Google promised three years of updates for its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and is under constant pressure from rival Apple—which supports devices for four/five years—to deliver better support.

The Nexus 5X, 6P and Pixel C will instead remain on Android 8.1 Oreo, but they will receive security updates until at least November this year. After that period, Google will have no supported tablets in its lineup, unless it launches a new one. Perhaps another indication of their demise.
