Update (03/19): The U.S. version of PUBG Mobile landed today in the Google Play Store. Just like the Canadian version discussed below, the Mobile variant of one of the hottest games today is virtually the same as its PC counterpart, albeit with lower-res graphics and a touch interface. The game is free-to-play, and you can download it by clicking the button attached below.
Original article (03/15): If you live in the Great White North and happen to own an Android smartphone, you can be one of the first people in the West to play the mobile version of the hit battle royale game Player Unknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG). PUBG Mobile is now available to download in the Google Play Store in Canada. The game is being developed by Lightspeed & Quantum Studio, and published by Tencent, under the supervision of PUGB's original development team, Bluehole.
The soft launch of the game in the West was confirmed earlier this morning on the official PUBG Mobile Facebook page. As with the hit PC and Xbox One versions of the game, PUBG Mobile supports up to 100 players in a match, as they are dropped from the sky onto a simulated 8×8 km location. Each player then has to find weapons, vehicles or anything else he or she needs to kill and survive
PUBG Mobile was first announced back in December for the Chinese market, but until now there was no confirmation that it would make its way across the Pacific to North America. The Canadian soft launch may mean that it is close to a release in the U.S., but there's no launch date yet for that country. A second arcade-based PUBG game for smartphones, Army Attack, has been announced but has not yet launched.
The release of PUBG Mobile in Canada comes on the heels of another popular PC-console game in the genre, Fortnite: Battle Royale, soft launching an iOS beta version earlier this week. Epic Games is developing the Fortnite mobile game, which is also due to launch later on Android. It will feature cross-platform multiplayer with its PC and console counterparts, which is something that PUGB Mobile is not able to offer.
