Alleged Nokia 9 spec sheet leaks with triple cameras and in-glass fingerprint scanner

Last we’ve heard of the Nokia 9 was early last month when a report surfaced about a supposed Nokia 9 with a “best in-class” smartphone camera. Today’s leak just might support that idea, although, we should still proceed with skepticism.

There’s a long list of alleged specifications that looks very well put together. There’s a lot here but we’re only going to take a look at the most significant features.

There’s a 6.01” AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio: the golden standard in smartphone displays for 2018. Around back is a ceramic back plate with an “18 karat gold finish” which likely means that the camera housing is gold plated, much like the Mi Mix 2 and Mix 2S. There’s an in-glass fingerprint scanner, but we don’t know if that’s under the display or behind the glass. The image shows the Android ONE tramp stamp.

Next on the sheet is a trio of cameras: one that would support earlier reports of a “best in-class” smartphone camera. Much like the recently announced Huawei P20 Pro’s triple cam setup, this one has RGB, telephoto, and monochrome lenses with 41MP, 20MP, and 9.7MP (respectively). This setup would have Xenon + LED flash and carries Zeiss’ branding.

This would be the third-generation of Nokia’s 41MP sensor and could instantly become a successor to the Windows-powered

href="https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_lumia_1020-5506.php">Lumia 1020 from 2013. Since then, (only until the recent announcement of the P20 Pro) there has not been another smartphone with such a large sensor. This sensor has 1.4 micron pixels while the Lumia 1020’s were 1.12 microns.

24-bit audio recording with low distortion, fast wireless charging, and IP68 water resistance are all mentioned here. The phone is Quick Charge 4.0 compliant and an adapter is needed for a 3.5mm headphone jack. Oh yeah, and there’s a 3,900 mAh battery pack inside.

Other specs include 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage on the UFS 2.1 standard. Android 8.1 Oreo comes out of the box and the phone supports dual nanoSIM cards. We don't think there’s microSD card expansion.

In terms of cameras, smartphones have stagnated around 12 to 20 MP sensors for the past several years. With Huawei really pushing the limits in terms of smartphone photography with the P20, if Nokia was to do the same thing, we’d see more focus (pun intended) on smartphone cameras in the near future.

We’d really like to see Nokia release such an ambitious device. Previous release time frames pointed to a September launch, so perhaps Nokia would take the stage at IFA to announce such a handset. We believe that a September launch for a smartphone with all this technology could be realistically possible for a launch at IFA.

What do you think of the supposed Nokia 9? Is this something you’d be interested in or would you rather see any of these features on a device by another smartphone maker?
