What is a capacitor?
Capacitor is a device which store the electric charges in it when it connected with a power supply. And it release the charges to maintain a constant voltage when the voltage is changed to low.Capacitor unit:
The unit of the capacitor is "farad"What are the Different Types of capacitor ?
The capacitors are differentiated based on the depletion layer in the capacitorthere are ten capacitor types
- Ceramic capacitor
- Electrolytic capacitor
- Tantalum capacitor
- Silver Mica Capacitor
- Polystyrene Film Capacitor
- Metallised Polyester Film Capacitor
- Polycarbonate capacitor
- Polypropylene Capacitor
- Glass capacitors
- Supercap
Always a capacitor is connected with any devices in parallel connection because a will optimize the voltage not current.
A capacitor having two terminal, these two terminals are connected with two plates inside the capacitor.
These two plates will not have any physical conduct. And these two plates are separated by a dielectric medium.
When the supply is given to the capacitor, the electric charges will take place in the capacitor plates
The capacity of storing charges in plates are depends upon the material used for making the plates and dielectric medium.
Usually, The capacitors used to maintain content voltage in a circuit,
Capacitor Function:
Simply, the capacitor stores the electrical charges in the plates and release it when required.Usually, The capacitors used to maintain content voltage in a circuit,
What Does a Capacitor Do ?
See the circuit given below, When the voltage of the supply is get lagged for a shot time, the capacitor release the charges and maintain the voltage, So Though there was a voltage lag, the light bulb did not get dim due to the capacitor. How to Make a Simple Capacitor ?
Requirements for Capacitor:
- Aluminum foil
- Wires
- Glue
- Plastic sheet may be cotton sheet
- electric
tape
Making of Capacitor:
- Cut the two aluminum foils in rectangle shape
- Cut the plastic sheet in rectangle shape as same as aluminium foil
- Spread cum on plastic sheet and paste the aluminium foil on it
- Now, spread the glue down side of the plastic sheet and paste another aluminium foil
- Connect one wire with first foil and another on is second foil
- Roll it to cylindrical shape
- That's all, Finshed
How to Test a Capacitor ?
There is couple of ways to check the capacitor, here I used checking capacitor with basic multi meter method.
- First connect the two terminals of the capacitor with rated power supply.
- Keep it for 5 to 10 seconds
- Now set the multimeter in measuring 20 V DC mode
- Remove the capacitor from supply and connect with mutimeter
- Now, It will show some voltage reading.
- These voltage reading showing because there is some stored electric charge in capacitor
- If there is no readings, Your capacitor is not worrking
How to Discharge a Capacitor ?
Just short circuit the terminals of the capacitor for 5 seconds, it will be automatically discharged
