The Helio G90 will be the first dedicated gaming chip from MediaTek. The teaser poster that announced its existence doesn’t give away much, but the full reveal is coming soon.
We can speculate that the G90 is based on the Helio P90, which has a CPU with two Cortex-A75 cores (2.2GHz) and six A55 cores (2.0GHz). As for the GPU, it’s an Imagination PowerVR GM9446 (970MHz), which promises a 15% improvement over the Mali-G72 MP3 used in the Helio P70.
Will the G90 use the same GPU? MediaTek can improve the gaming experience with a gaming mode like the Kirin chips have. Still, we may see a more powerful GPU – ARM has the Mali-G76 and G77 graphics cores, Imagination has a new line of Furian flagship GPUs (the GM9446 is a mid-range part from the Rogue family).
Gaming phones seem to be rising in popularity, but a common criticism against them is that they use the same chipsets as non-gaming flagships. With chips like the Helio G90 and Snapdragon 855 Plus, they will finally have more to work with than improved cooling and gaming modes.
