Pre-release nubia Red Magic 5G revealed in first live photo

Smartphone companies have been racing each other to introduce a handset with a 120 Hz screen, but nubia is about to one-up them all. The upcoming Red Magic 5G will have whopping 144 fps that is the true improvement in screen performance - that is the equivalent of a gaming PC with a 144 Hz monitor.

GameBench got its hands on a pre-release nubia Red Magic 5G that has Snapdragon 865 chipset, 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. There is also active cooling to keep the internals at a lower temperature, so there won’t be any thermal throttling.

Interestingly enough, the battery is listed as 5,000 mAh, but a phone with a 4,400 mAh cell was certified earlier, so we might be having either two variants of the gaming device, or the MIIT one is a pre-production unit.

During the testing process, the nubia Red Magic 5G reached median 144 fps with minimum 142 fps while running Real Racing 3, the beloved mobile racing game.

Meanwhile, PUBG and Arena of Valor, two of the stars in Tencent’s portfolio, capped respectively at 90 fps and 60 fps.

Even if the frame rate and screen refresh rate are two completely different frequencies, they are pretty dependent on one another - if one of them is underperforming, the other is also struggling.

GameBench highlighted the fact that Qualcomm is doing its best to develop sync between the GPU and smartphone display, and it is achieved pretty well in the new Snapdragon 865 chipset, despite the pre-release OS build.
