- Samsung's next Galaxy Fold model is reportedly named the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.
- This would be consistent with Samsung's plans to unify its foldable phone lineup.
- The new phone might be announced in August.
Samsung's Galaxy Fold sequel may get a new name when it arrives — and it could be a mouthful.
SamMobile sources claim the new foldable phone will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 2. That's not exactly an elegant name, but Samsung previously said it would apply the "Galaxy Z" label to its entire foldable phone line, not just the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell. This potentially brings more consistency to naming schemes. The company had already moved the original Fold to the Galaxy Z section of its website.
Rumors so far suggest the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be a refinement of the Fold's initial formula. It should still unfold to reveal a large internal display (possibly a 7.6-inch, 120Hz panel) while packing a 6.2-inch external screen that should be easier to use than the 4.6-inch view you get today. You'd also get 5G wireless and the Galaxy S20 Plus' camera array, although it's not certain that the Snapdragon 865 processor will carry over.
It's not yet certain when the Z Fold 2 might be announced. Samsung has historically unveiled its flagship devices for the second half of the year (such as the Galaxy Note family) in August, though, and it shipped the first Fold in September 2019. For many, the real issue is price. Rumors have hinted the new model might cost less than its $1,980 predecessor, but it would still carry a stiff premium versus its single-screened counterparts.
