OnePlus 9 series will feature a 50MP Sony IMX766 ultrawide camera, CEO shares camera sample

OnePlus recently confirmed that the primary cameras on its OnePlus 9 series arriving on March 23 will use Sony's IMX789 sensor. Now the company has also revealed the ultrawide camera on the OnePlus 9 will use an IMX766 sensor.

The ultrawide camera will have 50MP resolution, and OnePlus says the unit will come with a freeform lens, which will reduce distortion from 20% to about 1%. OnePlus CEO Mr. Pete Lau even shared a couple of pictures on Twitter - one is captured with a conventional camera and has some distortion, while the other is taken with the IMX766 and has minimal distortion.

Ultra-wide photography literally broadens your horizons. Shouldn’t it also keep them true? On the left, a shot taken with a conventional ultra-wide. On the right, the same (and yet totally different) photo taken with the #OnePlus9Series, free of distortion. pic.twitter.com/jbtWae2faP

The OnePlus 9 series reportedly includes three smartphones - vanilla 9, 9 Pro, and 9E. OnePlus hasn't yet confirmed which model will feature the 50MP IMX766 ultrawide unit, but it is likely the Pro will have one since it will be the top-end model in the lineup.
