5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Android Apps Weekly featured image with the new Friday the 13th game
Welcome to the 239th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from this week:

  • PUBG Corp is suing NetEase. NetEase launched Rules of Survival and Knives Out, two games that are remarkably similar to PUBG Mobile. In fact, they were so similar that people thought they were actually PUBG. Both games make use of many of PUBG's mechanics, including the pre-play zone, sky diving into the battlefield, shrinking battle zones, and more. We'll see how this one turns out as well.
  • To the surprise of no one, Apple's App Store continues to make way more money than Google Play while Google Play accrues more downloads. The only thing that changes year-to-year is by how much. This year, the App Store out-earned Google Play by about 85%. The gap continues to shrink slowly, but it'll still be a long time before Google catches up.
  • Some hackers caused havoc on YouTube this week. They gained access to some of Vevo's accounts. From there, they took down videos, put up different videos, and caused all sorts of problems. The hack had nothing to do with YouTube, thankfully. It was all on Vevo's end, according to YouTube. Vevo has since patched the vulnerability and are working to put their channels back together.
  • ESPN launched a new streaming service this week. The service calls itself ESPN Plus and it costs $5 per month. According to ESPN, it offers content for MLB, NHL, boxing, soccer, college sports, PGA, and many others. The NFL and NBA are noticeably absent, though. We imagine that matters to many sports fans. Those interested have a 30-day free trial ahead of them to check it out. This might actually be pretty decent as long as you don't mind not having American football or basketball.
  • Hulu and Spotify teamed up for a new bundled package. You can now get Spotify and Hulu for $13 per month. The deal includes Spotify's premium service as well as Hulu's premium experience with ads. That's not a bad deal. There is a catch, though. For now, the deal is only available for Spotify premium members. That should open up in the future, though.

Knife Hit

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Knife Hit is a simple mobile game by Ketchapp. The goal is simple. You throw knifes at a block of wood until it breaks. There are apples to hit as well. The game features various unlockable knives and boss fights as well. That's about it for this one, really. It's not overly deep and you likely won't play it for hundreds of hours. However, this is a classic mobile phone game that's good for a few minutes of time killing. It is a freemium app, but even then it's not bad at all.

Base Calculator and Converter

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Base Calculator and Converter is what the name implies. It's a calculator as well as a converter tool. For the calculator side, it does the basics and also supports binary, octal, hex, and base numbers up to 36. It can also convert numbers in one base to numbers in another base if needed. This app is relatively new. We tested it, but there are likely bugs that we missed. We also appreciate the joke that 1/3 times three equals one. Nice touch. In any case, the app is completely free with no in-app purchases or ads that we could see.

FishingStrike

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
FishingStrike is a rare, new fishing game. It offers decent graphics, various fishing locations, 500 types of fish, and more. The game feels, plays, and acts like most freemium fishing games. However, this one has an AR/VR viewing mode. The fishes you catch are added to an aquarium. You can view this aquarium in either AR or VR as you choose. That's a fairly neat and uncommon feature. The loot chests, on the other hand, are so normal and drab that it drags down an otherwise enjoyable experience. It's a good game, but it's a game with a time limit before there is less fun and more grinding.

Browsery by Barnes & Noble

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Browsery is a new app from Barnes & Noble. It's a social network of sorts for readers. You log in, make friends, get recommendations, answer some fun questions, and do other things. It also lets you sample and purchase books from Barnes & Noble directly. The app is new and has a few issues. However, people seem to like it so far. Of course, it's yet another social network. However, this one likely won't take your time up like Facebook or Twitter would. There are those who don't like crowd sourcing their reading. That's fine, to each their own. Functionally speaking, the app does what it says and it's also free.

Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle

Price: Free / Up to $4.49
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is a horror game by the same developers of the popular Slayaway Camp. This game is a horror-puzzle game with over 100 levels across eight stages (or episodes). They feature Jason, cops, traps, murder, gore, and unlockable weapons. The game has a variety of purchase options. However, any purchase, no matter how cheap, removes the advertising. We also liked that the game launched on a Friday the 13th. Kudos, Blue Wizard. In any case, the game is good if you like horror games and puzzle games.
